Sodium, Potassium, Lithium and Calcium by Flame Photometry
Flame photometry measures alkali and alkaline-earth metals from the light they emit in a flame. It remains the practical choice for sodium and potassium in clinical, pharmaceutical, food and soil laboratories.

How it is measured
Aspirate
The sample is drawn into the burner as a fine mist.
Emit
Each element emits light at its own wavelength; a filter isolates it.
Quantify
Emission intensity is compared with standards to give concentration.

Frequently asked
Single or dual channel?
A single-channel instrument reads one element at a time. The dual-channel model reads sodium and potassium together from one aspiration, which halves the time per sample.
Can calcium and lithium be measured?
Yes. Filters for calcium and lithium, and barium on the microprocessor model, are available as options.
Measuring electrolytes?
List the elements and daily sample count. A specialist will suggest a model.
